Ten prison guards and four inmates killed after gunmen attacked prison in Ciudad Juarez, officials say.

Gunmen attacked a Mexican prison in the northern border city of Ciudad Juarez, leaving at least 14 dead and allowing 24 inmates to escape, according to government officials.

The Chihuahua State Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Sunday that the attackers arrived at the prison at 7 a.m. local time (2 p.m. GMT) in several armored vehicles and opened fire on guards. In the chaos that followed, 10 prison guards and four inmates were killed.

At least 13 people were injured, the prosecutor said.

Inside, some rioting inmates set fire to various objects and clashed with prison guards, local media reported.

The prosecution said Mexican soldiers and state police regained control of the prison later on Sunday.

At least four people were detained, the agency said, without specifying whether they were prisoners or armed assailants.

Details of how the 24 escaped prisoners managed to flee were not known and it was not immediately clear who carried out the attack.

The state prosecutor’s office said its staff has launched an investigation.

Violence is often in Mexican prisons, including some where authorities have only nominal control. Clashes regularly break out between inmates of rival gangs, who serve as proxies for drug cartels in places like Ciudad Juarez.

The city is located opposite the border town of El Paso, Texas, in the United States.

In August, a riot at the same state prison spread to the streets of Ciudad Juarez with violence, killing 11 people.

In that case, two inmates were killed in jail and alleged gang members began shelling the city, including killing four radio station employees promoting a restaurant.

Shortly before Sunday’s attack on Ciudad Juarez prison, municipal police were attacked and managed to arrest four men after a chase, the prosecutor’s office said.

Later, police killed two alleged attackers who were traveling in an SUV.
