Two things are certain in Destiny:
1) The development team will come up with increasingly esoteric reasons for players to go back to activities they’ve beaten thousands of times.
2) The players will find the fastest, cheapest path of least resistance between them and the rewards.
There’s no better proof of this saying than the current community event ‘Improving the Eliksni Quarters’, which started at yesterday’s reset and is expected to run until December 6th. But thanks to an easy-to-execute exploit that we have detailed beforeBungie’s random target for the event has already been broken into atoms.
The event involved playing all the usual Destiny 2 stuff – strikes, PvP, raids, lost sectors etc – to collect coins and other materials. These were then donated in a large charity box in The Tower, with the proceeds used to improve the slum in which the Eliksni (or ‘Fallen’) refugees were holed up. a nice cosmetic/narrative payout and free gear for our troubles.
The fact that the donation box also accepts a number of other materials proved crucial, however, as a loophole in Destiny 2’s never-less-Byzantine in-game economy allowed players to cheat infinite amounts of treasure coordinates. As you can see in the chart below, once the exploit got a lot of publicity (oops!), the donation rate exploded.
We should finish this in about 4.5 hours at this current rate. pic.twitter.com/3bsr4x21ecNovember 23, 2022
Sure enough, shortly after today’s reset, the whole challenge was done. All upgrades have now been implemented in the Eliksni Quarters, which you can access in-game via the HELM. Of course there is a small garden and some other noticeable improvements, although it still seems a bit hovely for my taste. I’m thankful to my fellow cheesemongers though, as I didn’t really feel like grinding for coins. I can now concentrate on the real thing of trying to solo the Grasp of Avarice dungeon flawlessly before the Restoration x2 is nerfed at the end of the season.
If you need to collect any of the event’s rewards, including a new ghost shell and a rising shard, coins and materials can still be dumped into the donation box in the tower, whether or not the event is actually over. And as far as I can see abuse still works for now, so you know what to do.
