Apple Music’s Dotty speaks to Headie One about his recently released European project No Borders, his love of travelling, favorite places to visit and his guide to France

Headie One on how his No Borders project came about
Just from traveling a lot. You see, when I was making my album, a lot of stuff on my album, I’m going to Germany. I did an interview with 16BARS. And so I was in Germany for a while and I just felt it. They kept me informed about the artists there, and the same with France. I was traveling a lot leading up to my first album, EDNA. Then I got to know a lot of artists and I met a lot of artists, I was in the studio with a lot of artists and I just kept the link. Gradually, even after the album, I was introduced to new people. I would go to Paris for Fashion Week. And then, through all my ups and downs, we managed to get a lot of music together and make a lot of recordings. And when I realized the quality of it was good and I had so much of it, of course I thought I wanted to make a project out of it.

Headie One about his favorite travel destinations

Probably somewhere random, you know. I have been to Switzerland. I went to Switzerland, a place called Andermatt. Andermatt is like a small town. I was unprepared. My socks got all wet. I had to check it out when I got there because I didn’t know how crazy it was. But it’s like crazy… There’s just snow everywhere. I just went there to chill out, like a little retreat. I thought I’d just try to ski, but I ended up actually skiing. Finally we got an instructor. I had to attend classes for three days. On the fourth day, I was basically up and down on my own. Literally, the kids were skiing better than me and that’s crazy. But they also have some nice places just like other hotels where you can eat and stuff. The atmosphere there is very small and intimate.
I have also been to Antigua. That was up there. This is new territory. Antigua is the first time I have been to the Caribbean. I could not believe it. It was crazy. I like to be isolated. Just chill. I met some friends on the island. They invited me into their crib. I went to the museum in Antigua. I learned about sugar, about how they used to export sugar. It was small. It was like the size of this room or something. They did try, init.

Headie One on his craziest travel experience
I have been stranded in Dubai before. I lost my passport and then had to do all that embassy stuff to get back. It was crazy. Just a few more days, but I had a show in Preston that very night. When the plane landed I had to sort out my passport and then the plane landed and the tour bus was waiting at the airport. Then I had to drive straight from… Get off the eight-hour flight and fly another five hours to Preston. And then perform! I was devastated!

Headie One on a trip to France
I have been to France a lot. Probably most, yes. I get off the plane. I usually keep my driver waiting. I have my driver there. And he just take us back to the hotel. It is a very small, intimate hotel. There is a pool table downstairs. We know all the staff there and that. It’s fun. It’s fun. We’re going to Caesar’s. The owners of Cesar’s are good people and that, so we go there a lot. I’ve been to Georges. There are many different places. Lots of food, lots of shopping. We go to Champs-Elysées or Avenue Montaigne. There is shopping, a lot of shopping. Chanel store, Dior store. Last time I went, I went to the hood. It’s crazy. It was kind of like you see from the old school… something in America or something. It’s like all the kids are coming out. It reminds me of what it was like in where I’m from but long ago. It’s not like that anymore. But it was like euphoria, it’s fun.

Headie One about his love for Venice
I went to Venice. That’s also one of my favorite places I’ve been. Been on that little gondola thing, all the water and everything. Venice is my vibe. Advanced. They also have nice shops, restaurants there and the food tastes fresh.

Headie One about his plans for next year
I worked a lot, recorded a lot of music. I’m going to do that for the rest of the year, just keep working. And then going into the new year, I have a European tour that I’m doing in February. Then hopefully finish my next project.
