The European Commission says most member states favor pre-departure testing amid rising cases in China.

Most European Union countries are in favor of introducing pre-departure COVID testing for travelers from China, the European Commission has said, as Beijing plans to lift travel restrictions for its citizens despite a wave of COVID infections.

The EU common approach came about on Tuesday after a meeting of the Health Security Committee, an EU advisory body of national health experts from the body’s 27 countries, chaired by the Commission.

“The vast majority of countries are in favor of pre-departure testing,” said a Commission spokesman.

“These measures should target the most appropriate flights and airports and be implemented in a coordinated manner to ensure their effectiveness,” he added.

The Commission prepared a draft proposal for talks on Tuesday, including a recommendation for wearing masks on flights from China, wastewater monitoring for aircraft arriving from China, genomic surveillance at airports and increased EU vigilance on testing and vaccination.

“This will now be reviewed and adopted based on input from [EU] Member States,” said the Commission spokesperson, adding that further discussions on the measures will take place at another meeting of EU health officials on Wednesday afternoon.

The spokesman said all EU countries agreed they needed a coordinated approach to the changing situation in China and to deal with the impact of increased travel from China to Europe after Beijing lifted its strict pandemic policy on January 8. cancelled.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said last week that it is not currently recommending any measures for travelers from China.

It said the variants circulating in China were already in the EU, European citizens had relatively high levels of vaccination and the likelihood of imported infections was low compared to daily infections in the EU, with health care systems currently coping.
