A young man from Kenya has become a fan favorite with his creative method of guiding people to the subway station.
Doha, Qatar – Abubakr Abbass, a 23-year-old from Kenya, has emerged as a huge fan favorite during the World Cup in Qatar – and an accidental social media sensation.
Seated on a tennis referee chair and wearing a big foam finger, he guides the hundreds of fans visiting the historic market – called Souq Waqif – to the nearby metro station using his trusty megaphone.
His helpful advice: ‘Metro? In this way. Subway? This way’, has now become a famous slogan.
“We love him; we love the subway man,” one fan said, gesturing to Abbass.
“I saw him on TikTok. I thought it was really funny. He makes me laugh; it’s such a simple task,” added a young fan in a Chelsea football shirt.
People visiting the popular Souq Waqif regularly interact with Abbass, going back and forth and creating pantomime-like scenes.
Not much is known about Abbass, but the mysterious social media star has earned praise for inspiring enthusiasm for an otherwise mundane task.
“He really enjoys his job,” said one impressed fan.
Abbass is now inspiring other employees to get involved, many of them now sporting his signature foam finger and giving fans directions in creative ways.
