Microsoft hopes to rip people off Google by incorporating machine learning into Bing.
A report of The information (opens in new tab) (through the edge (opens in new tab)) says the technology behind AI chatbot ChatGPT is coming to Microsoft Bing in March. The hope is that this could give Bing a bit more versatility beyond just ranking search results.
ChatGPT (opens in new tab) is an AI-powered chatbot that some say can provide almost human-like lengthy answers to open-ended questions. Microsoft had invested more than $1 billion in AI company OpenAI in 2019, and it looks like the tech giant is looking to capitalize on that investment and gain some ground over Google in the search engine space.
OpenAI is also behind the DALL-E image generator (opens in new tab) which Microsoft says will also be coming to Bing in the future.
So how will integrating the AI behind ChatGPT improve Microsoft Bing? Well, I actually went ahead and asked ChatGPT to generate a response and this is what it spat out.
“However, it is possible that the integration of ChatGPT or similar AI technology could be used to enhance Bing’s natural language processing capabilities, potentially enabling it to better understand and respond to user queries in natural language.”

While that was a pretty good answer, there were still a lot of issues in my time using ChatGPT. Too often in its responses the AI gets a lot of information is incorrect (opens in new tab)and it can be one bit problematic (opens in new tab) at. A lot has to do with the AI having a “limited understanding of world events beyond 2021,” according to the ChatGPT site. However, I’m more concerned about the bit that says it “may occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content”.
OpenAI released ChatGPT for public testing in November. Microsoft hopes to have an AI-powered version of Bing by the end of March. You can ask him to come up with essays on Star Wars, or make a top ten list of the best video games. It will be interesting to see exactly how Microsoft chooses to integrate this into Bing.
Oh and just for fun I asked ChatGPT to write a haiku about how bad Bing results can be and boy was it a bit brutal for an AI.
Search results so bad
Bing, you let me down once again
