Explosion outside the airport causes multiple casualties, a spokesman for the Taliban-led interior ministry said.
An explosion outside Kabul’s military airport has killed several people, a spokesman for the Taliban-led interior ministry said.
“Today an explosion took place outside the Kabul military airport, killing and injuring several of our citizens,” spokesman Abdul Nafi Takor told Reuters news agency, adding that an investigation is ongoing.
He did not specify the nature or purpose of the explosion. Responsibility for the blast was not immediately claimed.
Local residents said a loud explosion was heard near the military side of the heavily fortified airport before 8am (03:30 GMT).
They said the area was closed off by security forces and all roads were closed.
The Taliban authorities claim to have improved security since returning to power in August 2021, but there have been dozens of bombings and attacks, many alleged by the local branch of the armed group ISIL (ISIS).
Last month, at least five Chinese nationals were injured when ISIL attackers stormed a hotel popular with Chinese nationals in Kabul.
Hundreds of people, including members of Afghanistan’s minority communities, have been killed and injured to attack since the Taliban came back to power.
