“Guys, you can literally take this thing anywhere,” says Reddit user Bythion (opens in new tab) as they soar through the air at ~2500 feet above the ground, clinging to one Steam deck (opens in new tab) in one hand. Valve couldn’t ask for a better PR for its portable PC device than this.
The Steam Deck impressed us with its mobility – I especially love it for air travel, it’s an excellent way to pass the time while at 30,000 feet. But while Bythion is technically at a lower elevation, about 2,500 feet, admittedly their towering Deck experience (via PCGamesN (opens in new tab)) shows the portability of the handheld PC in a whole new light. Plus, they have to worry about dropping the thing, while all I had to worry about was accidentally kicking it under my seat while wrapped in my little airplane blanket.
They glide through the air in a paramotor: essentially a motor-driven fan strapped to the back of anyone willing to trust that thing with their life. It’s a pretty good looking hobby, if you don’t have a fear of heights. They slip close to Grapevine Lake in North Texas.
Obviously there isn’t much to game about actually piloting a powered aircraft, but the user does place one with the device turned on at least. Probably a risky maneuver to hit the power button almost flush with the deck chassis while wearing thick gloves to keep out the winter air.
Bythion says they might try again in the spring, when the weather warms up, and maybe then we’ll see some real gaming while we’re at the helm.
