Yungblud has revealed that his childhood was marked by his parents’ “abusive” relationship.

The 25-year-old singer – whose real name is Dominic Harrison – grew up in Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England with father Justin and mother Samantha and two younger sisters, but he says the pair’s explosive feuds and problems stem from the guitar shop of the family made him unhappy.

Speaking to Louis Theroux on his new BBC series ‘Louis Theroux Interviews…’, the musician explained: “My parents had a weird, beautifully dark relationship where I don’t know if I’ve ever seen two people love each other as much as they have done, but I don’t think I have seen anyone hurt each other so much.

“It was physically, mentally and emotionally abusive. I’ve always wanted to build a world where I could exist to escape what was going on around me.”

His parents can be seen on the show along with their son and Justin said of the arguments with Samantha: “We were yelling at each other excessively, you know.

“I had anger issues and I still go to therapy every week. I’ve been a lot calmer in the last few years, but I clearly needed therapy to control my anger outbursts and that’s what I did.”

Samantha added: “When we first met we were 16. You keep each other’s pants off. You don’t necessarily respect each other. I’m not trying to justify it but our neutral position is probably one of disrespect and youth and passion and we have to shout the loudest and we have to get our way.

“We went to counseling for several years and I think we learned to respect each other.”

She went on to say she felt “guilty guilty” after reading interviews her son gave about his childhood and the singer burst into tears as he admitted that the family have yet to properly work through all of their issues together.

He added, “It’s driving me crazy. It’s rough. I just don’t think we’ve worked out a lot of things together yet.”

However, he insisted that he loves his family and said he could also express his fear in his music, with Justin concluding, “I think our family is very close to saying what we’ve been through.”
